Neuqua Valley English teacher, Jason Verdin, has turned his favorite hobby into a second career.

Verdin runs his own  business, Jay V Photography, which specializes in wedding and engagement photos, as well as group and solo portraits. Verdin enjoys capturing “the feeling in the moment,” which he feels he can do best through his chosen specialties.

Verdin’s photography consists of a mixture of journalistic photos, which consists of candid pictures, and traditional photos, such as posed family pictures. While working, Verdin will sometimes prompt his clients, telling them to pose a certain way for a more attractive picture, but mostly, he tells them to ignore him, as Verdin claims the best photos are the ones where “people look like they’re having a good time.” He says this technique works better at events than portrait shoots as “everyone is usually happy at weddings.”

Because Verdin works mainly outdoor events, he prefers working with natural lighting. He often photographs clients during  ‘golden hour,’ a period of time either shortly after sunrise or before sunset where light is much softer. He gives his photos their finishing touches with Adobe Lightroom.

He began dabbling in photography in college because he “needed a way to buy books and eat food.”  After being asked to photograph a friend’s wedding, Verdin used a camera he bought from E bay to capture their event. From there the hobby took off and eventually morphed into his business today.

Verdin says managing two careers “is all about balance.”  If he knows there is a long weekend off from school, he’ll schedule in more photography work. Although he loves photography, Verdin isn’t thinking about making it full-time job because “the income isn’t guaranteed, and [he] really love[s] teaching.”
