Every year, as the temperatures drop and the days grow shorter, many students find themselves slipping into what’s often called the “winter slump.” The colder weather, darker mornings and busier academic pace can leave students feeling less motivated, more tired, and disconnected from school life. It’s a quiet but common shift, and one that affects the mood and energy at Neuqua Valley. However, recognizing how challenging this time of year can be, each Student Council committee has a series of initiatives to combat the seasonal struggles.
Community Relations, School Relations, and Special Events aim their activities at lifting spirits and helping students stay grounded throughout the winter, with the goal of bringing warmth, community and encouragement to a time of year when students often need it most.
The Community Relations committee led one of the most participatory events of the season, the Winter Wishes Bingo, on Nov. 21. With a fundraising goal of $2,000, this event emphasized schoolwide participation through a light-hearted activity.
“Students can get involved by buying bingo cards, which makes a difference,” said Community Relations Chair Neil Sekhri.
Bingo cards were available to be purchased online for $1, and new numbers were announced each period. Winners received light projectors and candy, which allowed students to take their minds off of their many responsibilities, and focus their attention on playing bingo with their friends.
“My favorite events to organize are ones in which we can get as many people involved as possible,” said Sekhri.
Highlighting the value of a large-scale environment of impact, Sekhri displays the desire of the student council in having as much participation as possible. By encouraging all students to join in, the Community Relations Committee helps to refresh the environment at Neuqua Valley, one bingo card at a time.
Meanwhile, the School Relations Committee is preparing for its Winter Recharge event, scheduled for Dec. 12. Designed to brighten the school environment during a typically difficult season, the event will feature winter-themed decorations, treat distribution, and the return of the “Pop-A-Shot” game during lunch periods, where students can compete for prizes.
“We also get to decorate the school with posters and flyers, as well as other little things that get the students involved and energized,” said school Relations Chair Ishaan Raghav.
These activities allow students to connect and bond with others, removing stress and bringing cheer into the school. When winter rolls around, decorations and treats help keep everyone at Neuqua engaged and attentive, uniting the school.
Additionally, students can get involved with Neuqua once again in January for the School Relations’ staff appreciation event. Students can write cards and participate alongside other student council peers as well as others who would like to help celebrate the staff at Neuqua. By bringing students together through writing cards or making gifts, the community at Neuqua is electrified and can continue through the school year with a little more enthusiasm.
Finally, the Special Events Committee is hosting Mr. NVHS, a fun, mock beauty pageant at the end of February. This exciting competition is a notable tradition, where each year contestants are scored in various categories to potentially win two prom tickets.
“Students at Neuqua can come and hype up the participants on the day of the event,” said Kaitlyn Wei, Special Events Committee Chair.
All students and families are encouraged and welcome to watch the show, support friends, and make donations. By cheering and contributing, Neuqua students engage in a carefree night, boosting spirits and ridding tension.
Volunteers can also assist with different operations to ensure the event runs smoothly, once again, inviting schoolwide involvement. Mr. NVHS, annually, plays a big part in the strengthening of Neuqua Valley’s community and student morale during what can be an extremely stressful time.
Through these winter initiatives, Student Council provides students with multiple ways to stay connected, motivated, and engaged during a season that at many times can feel isolating. By combining schoolwide events, festive activities, and opportunities to support both peers and staff, Student Council helps to foster a strong sense of community and school spirit. These programs not only offer fun and entertainment, but also give students a chance to relieve stress, celebrate one another, and feel part of something larger than themselves.
Even in the coldest months, Student Council’s efforts remind students that Neuqua Valley is a place to belong, participate, and find moments of joy, keeping the school vibrant and engaged throughout the winter.
