Prescription drug drop off

The Naperville Fire Department hopes to keep citizens safe by encouraging people to dispose of unused prescription drugs at its prescription drug drop off centers. These centers are located at every fire department in the city. The process is designed to be simple and easy. Citizens can dispose of their prescription drugs at any of the boxes located at a fire station. Bill Croft of the Naperville Fire Department explains that around 2,000 pounds of prescription medication are collected by the 10 fire stations in Naperville a month. After the medication is counted and processed, it is sent to a third party company in order to process and dispose of them properly.

The purpose of Drug Take Back Centers is to limit the amount of unsecured and unused medication. This helps prevent young children from accidentally ingesting the pills, and deters theft of medication that has narcotic properties. Croft explains that the city has had issues with people flushing unused medications, causing water contamination, and the prescription drop off boxes should provide an accessible alternative.
