Teen heart screening returns to Neuqua

Young Hearts for Life, a program run by Edward-Elmhurst Health, is returning at Neuqua Valley. Every few years, they offer free heart screens to students. They search for issues that, if undetected, could lead to “sudden cardiac death.”

The screening is otherwise available through medical centers and hospitals but can cost between $50 and $200 and is not always covered by insurance companies.

Screenings for freshmen are on Jan. 31, and screenings for upperclassmen will be held on Feb. 14. Edward-Elmhurst Health and the Indian Prairie Educational Foundation help pay for the screenings, which are run by volunteers.

Any adult is allowed to volunteer, regardless of previous medical experience. Training will take place the day before each set of screenings.

Students need parent permission to register and can find registration information at the Young Hearts for Life website, http://www.yh4l.org.
