As opinions pass from student to student, there have been some thoughts towards the homecoming theme. Before I began writing for The Echo, and even before I was a student roaming these halls, I heard speculation surrounding homecoming—more specifically, the theme.
The majority of the feedback was negative, people don’t believe it’s the best option, saying things like, “the theme is limiting and restrictive.” And contrasting thoughts like, “I feel as if it’s too broad—you’re not getting a good enough idea or understanding.” As I asked around, I noticed most felt this way, which I did not understand. Not only did freshmen share these opinions, but so did upperclassmen.
Before I interviewed the Special Events Committee, I assumed students had a say in the theme, however, they do not.
Well, let me rephrase that: not all students do. The process of choosing a homecoming theme is performed by “The Homecoming Committee,” a smaller subsection of Student Council. “Usually, homecoming preparations are kept within the committee, which is open to all at the beginning of the year.” So, in order to have a say in the theme you must join the Student Council. Applications are submitted to show interest at the beginning of the year and are sorted through later on. A limit of 60 students are chosen and assigned certain roles, with one member explaining that “with the work we do, the committee maxes out at around 60 students and is closed due to lack of seats.” Also, the homecoming theme is set the school year prior, during the spring. It takes them around 2-3 weeks to come to an overall decision.
This process begins with the sponsors, Ms. Yavorski and Ms. Altidis. They introduce a list of ideas they have already thought of and encourage members of the committee to add on. After scrounging up a list, they begin eliminating weaker themes, such as ones that are too broad or unworkable. Cutting topics left and right leaves them with around 5-10 final choices. Members group up and create theme boards surrounding the lasting suggestions. Some finalists from last year consisted of Candyland, Starry Night, and the Met Gala. Once they’ve completed their boards, they are presented to the sponsors and voted on.
This is how they ended up with Island Splash. If you are one of the people who do not personally care for this year’s theme, do not let it determine the outcome of your night. As mentioned previously, you can contribute your opinions if you are a part of the Homecoming Committee, so we encourage you to sign up!
