Neuqua Valley High School recently hosted its annual Masterworks Concert, an event that showcases the talent and dedication of the Freshman level groups in the music department. The concert, held on January 18, featured the freshmen class in a unique spotlight, with this year’s piece focused on Carmina Burana.
One part of the Masterworks Concert is its commitment to presenting well-known works from famous composers each year. This time, the spotlight was on Carmina Burana, a cantata composed by Carl Orff. The students, including the band, choir, and orchestra, dedicated themselves to mastering the music.
Preparing for the Masterworks Concert required separate rehearsals for each ensemble, which is composed of the band, choir and orchestra. However, as the concert date approached, the students rehearsed in the auditorium together.
“What makes the Masterworks Concert even more special is its focus on the freshmen class,” said Aditi Cherukuri, a senior an four-year member of the Neuqua Choir department. “As they are not part of the Crystal concert, this event provides them with an opportunity to showcase their musical talent.” The freshmen started the concert by performing their songs and setting the stage for the special annual concert.
The capstone musical groups took the stage following them. These groups included the more advanced and experienced musicians, highlighting the past couple of years that they had been dedicated and involved.
Groups also performed together, including a unique collaboration with Varsity Choir, Cecillian Singers and Bass Chorus. Notably, the groups faced a unique challenge when they had a rehearsal on the day of their final exams. Despite the time constraints, the combined rehearsals with the band, choir, and orchestra proved to be enough as the concert was a beautiful embodiment how what music is.
This collaborative rehearsal also allowed the students to synchronize their efforts and adapt to the conducting style of Mr. Jonathan Lauff, the Fine Arts Department Chair at Neuqua Valley.
The Masterworks Concert at Neuqua Valley High School was not just an evening of music but a celebration of talent, dedication and collaboration. The students delivered a wonderful winter performance that wrapped up their fall semester. Neuqua Valley High School continues to showcase the immense musical talent of its students through events like this.
