As students in high school, we have an important decision to make as to which career we want to pursue in the future. Career Week is an extremely beneficial event that is held at Neuqua every year. Students are given the opportunity to speak directly with professionals about certain occupations and further explore their interests and passions.
This event can help inspire students who are struggling to decide what path they want to take after high school. By asking the professionals questions about their personal experiences and how their jobs work, students can better understand what certain careers entail.
Mrs. Langerock is one of the counselors who is responsible for organizing Career Week. “The purpose of it is for students to have access to real community members who are currently working professionally in roles across a variety of different industries.” She encourages students to research different careers and explore the various opportunities that await after graduation. One way students can figure out what careers interest them is by reviewing the Career Clusters. These clusters group similar types of jobs into specific categories.
Career Week lasted for 4 days this November and there were over 80 professionals who presented. Each presenter had a table where they could display images, videos, or even physical items. They provide information about their working lifestyle, special projects that they get to manage, what kind of people they work with, and much more. This event is a great way for students to be exposed to different industries and roles.
Dan Robertson, an Entrepreneur who was one of the professionals at this year’s Career Week, hoped that students would “find what they want to do” through the event and feel inspired by his presentation. He recommends that students follow a career that they are passionate about and says that they should “have the courage to do it.”
Finding an occupation that interests you isn’t always easy. By attending Career Week, students can discover new ambitions and find new topics they may be interested in learning more about. This event can help students decide what kinds of classes they want to take at Neuqua to deepen their knowledge of a specific area. The variety of courses offered at our school can also help students figure out what they want to study in the future. Students can also join different clubs and extracurricular activities which allow them to get involved while also being a part of something they enjoy.
Career Week is highly recommended for those who are still uncertain about where they want to go after high school. It can open new doors for students and inspire them to research more about a specific field. It is never too early to start planning ahead and by utilizing the opportunities that Neuqua provides, students can be better prepared.
This annual event welcomes new speakers every year which gives students the chance to expand their knowledge about different available careers. If you couldn’t make it to Career Week this time around, be sure to attend next year to speak with all of the kind professionals and hear about their occupational and educational journeys.
