Met Gala 2022 Musings
May 6, 2022
After much anticipation, the 2022 Met Gala took place on Monday, May 1, 2022. Since it had been canceled in 2020 due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus, it had been held in the September of 2021 but is back to its former glory as The First Monday of May of each year. With so much excitement brewing for this event, which was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, you would think that the bedazzled invitees would dress to impress. However, even with such a simple and enticing theme as Gilded Glamor—which encouraged the guests to put their own spin on 19th-century fashion of the Gilded Age—most of the attendees failed to meet up to expectations and ignored the theme altogether. Without further adieu, here are our thoughts on the Met Gala looks of the night.
Without doubt, the star of the night was one of the Co-Chairs herself—Blake Lively. Paying homage to New York City architecture in a dazzling Atelier Versace dress that transformed as she walked the red carpet, Lively successfully captured the opulence that characterized the dramatic fashion of New York City’s elite in the late 19th-century.
Billie Eilish stunned in her Gucci corseted outfit that was clearly inspired by the fashion trends of the Gilded Age. The light pastels of the gown beautifully contrasted with her black choker and updo, and her laced sleeves enhanced the outfit even further. In addition, Eilish’s look had been made out of “already existing materials” and thus eco-friendly.
Kim Kardashian entered the Met Gala with her draw dropping resemblance to Marilyn Monroe. She chose the gown Monroe had worn during the Happy Birthday song for JFK. Her dress was at its peak during Monroe’s age, with the gleaming crystals laid dazzling throughout her dress, and her body being just the perfect cut out.
Known for her boho chic style, Vanessa Hudgens dazed everyone with her practically transparent yet embroidered gown. This outfit was designed by Jeremy Scott, it was a Moschino ball gown and presented Hudgens with glamor and a gothic-like twist. The top of the gown began with an extravagant pattern then transitioned into the bottom with a sheer bodice skirt, as well as a sleek skirt following her.
Quannah Chasinghorse strutted the Met Gala carpet wearing a Prabal Gurung designed gown, meant to pay tribute to Indigenous culture. Her gown had appreciated her bodice and glowed in its unique aqua color, practically separating her from the other invites. She also paid extreme attention to highlight and emphasize her traditional and native jewelry, all inspired by native artists and designers from her community.
Bella Hadid—known for her universally impeccable street style—once again proved to be nothing but flawless in her execution of this gorgeous Burberry dress. Incorporating telltale elements of fashion during the Gilded Age with the fitted corset bodysuit and intricate lace detailing, Hadid still managed to successfully ensure that her own sense of style shined through.
Emma Chamberlain—a universally-loved influencer who rose to fame during her teenage years—strutted the carpet with a dazzling two-piece outfit by none other than Louis Vuitton. Complete with a cream crop top with puffed sleeves and a white column skirt that extended into a train, Chamberlain topped her look with a small vintage tiara by Cartier. Her makeup, which heavily used shades of gold and copper, in addition to her cream colored top, was very reminiscent of the fashion trends in circulation during the Gilded Age.
