You’re nuts if you think I’m jelly: Celebrating National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day

Why are peanut butter and jelly sandwiches so good? Chef and author Justin Warner says its because of the “law of peanut butter and jelly…[the] fat in peanut butter is mostly good fat, the sweetness comes from the jelly, and the bread is the vehicle that holds all this gloriousness together.”

Peanut butter and jelly: the holy grail of a sandwich. But, why is the delicious combination only recognized as being a sandwich? Apr. 2 gives the creamy and fruity power house a day of its own, creating national peanut butter and jelly day!

I wanted to prove that the realm of peanut butter and jelly was not limited to a sandwich, so I attempted a new creation: the peanut butter and jelly cookie. Only 3 ingredients were needed to make the cookie, so it was incredibly easy. Then, I slathered a layer of Trader Joe’s raspberry jelly on top, since I cannot stand grape jelly, and the concoction was made.

The recipe was simple: 1 cup of sugar, 1 egg and 1 cup of peanut butter. I used jiffy smooth. Then, into the oven they went at 350 degrees for 11 minutes, and the outcome was a chewy and peanut butter packed cookie.

I was unsure about how the jelly would taste, but I had to stick to the tradition of the food holiday and add it. I’m not going to lie, it tasted kind of weird. The cookie itself was awesome, and the jelly itself was really good, but together it made a weirdly sweet and crunchy peanut butter jelly that was not appetizing.

I guess sticking to the sandwich is the best way to go, but there are most definitely other combinations that if you are up for it, should go for it! Be bold, just like Julia Davis Chandler and how she created the first ever documented recording of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich!

Even though the flavor was weird, it was definitely worth it to try it out. For next time though, I will be sticking to regular pb and j sandwiches! (Maya Stone)
