The Christkindlmarket goes by many names and includes just as many interesting stories behind it. Every year, Naper settlement holds its very own Christkindlmarket for residents and everyone around to enjoy for free. There are stalls for food, clothes, and even more intricate items that line the streets of this quaint area.

One of the stall owners that was at Christkindlmarket this year is named Leith Zeit and shared his unique experiences with me. Upon first viewing of his stall, one would think that he only sells wood Nativity scenes. Though that is partly true, there is a much richer background behind the business. Each carving is completely hand-made, and on top of that, they are all carved from dead olive tree roots in Jerusalem. In the Christian religion, this land and type of tree are both considered very holy. Zeit explained how the business originally started in his homeland but because of the majority population being muslim and the danger of the area, he had to come to America. Running this business means so much to Zeit which he supports when he says, “the cross and nativity mean everything to me. Some tourists were scared to go to Bethlehem, so we had to bring the carvings from there to here. It is important we keep selling items, so my boss can send money back to the children and church in Jerusalem.” His stall is directly at the entrance of the market in Naper settlement, and his carvings are admired by all passer-bys. The Christmas season won’t last forever though, so Zeit is working hard to help raise money for the children while he can.
